While it is understood that the doctors provide the necessity based services to the society, yet they should not consider themselves to be free from any kind of controls. Especially in this age of information technology, where there are hardly any limitations on the spread of information to the remotest part of the world, doctors need to understand that if they need to be professional in their service, they also need keep a check on their services and approaches. The relevance of doctor reviews and doctor ratings has increased in the recent times especially due to the power of internet.

Most people who have taken up services from doctors have posted their experiences, both good and bad, giving opportunities for others to think before they seek the services from them. The doctors need to believe that such feedback is critical not only for prospective customers but also for themselves, if they need to survive the market competition and increase the professional value of their health care services.

While doctor reviews and doctor ratings will continue to be increasing over the internet, yet to genuinely understand both the advantages and disadvantages the customers face while seeking services from the doctor, some kind of review needs to be carried out. Sometimes, doctors may just become surprised at the negative comments mentioned about them over the internet, in spite of getting some friendly customers and in spite of the assumption that they have been providing some good services.

At these times, the doctors many suddenly move into action and start thinking of carrying out the internal review of their own services so that they can understand as to where they have gone wrong. Doctor reviews and doctor ratings should be seriously taken up by the doctors.

Usually, external reviewers carry out the task of reviewing the services of the doctor for the purpose of understanding the problems the doctor is facing. The doctor can hire external reviewers as part of some feedback exercise. The external reviewers can interact and personally interview the current patients as well as past patients to get an idea about how good or bad the services have been at this particular doctor's clinic. The review could cover different topics of the services.

It could include the ability to take the appointment, the time spent in waiting for meeting the doctor, the first consultation provided by the doctor to the patient and the cost involved in the entire service. All these aspects of the service need to be understood clearly. The external reviewer could possibly use a questionnaire with questions related to different aspects of the services. The questions are jointly developed by the doctor and the reviewer.

While the reviewer carries out the review independently, it is not the right thing for the doctor to intervene with the review at this stage. For a complete, unbiased report of the review, the doctor should give some time to the reviewer. When the review is complete, the reviewer would give the report and also suggest recommendations for improvement in addition to identifying the gaps in the existing services.
